Services to ISU

Enhancing ISU's Voice and Visibility on Capitol Hill and Among Federal Agencies

ISU's Washington, D.C. office strives to promote better and more extensive relationships with members and staff of the Iowa Congressional delegation. We help university faculty and administrators organize meetings in Washington, D.C. with legislators and their staff, host Members of Congress and staff on campus, and identify opportunities for faculty and senior campus officials to serve on federal advisory boards and to testify before Congress. Periodically, we organize special briefings with ISU experts on timely topics of legislative interest.

Monitoring and Representing University Positions on Federal Legislation and Policy

Federal relations staff monitor, analyze, and respond to legislation and regulations affecting ISU and the higher education community. On behalf of the President, our office often represents the University's positions on these important issues to federal officials.

Expanding Federal Funding Opportunities for ISU Research

In coordination with ISU's academic and administrative leadership, the Washington, D.C. office each year develops and promotes a list of research projects for targeted, Congressional funding. Research proposals are selected through a rigorous, campus-wide review process. The projects selected reflect the University's strengths and priorities and complement the mission statements and objectives of federal agencies and Iowa's Congressional delegation.

Representing ISU Among Select Higher Education Associations

Federal relations staff members represent ISU on the Council of Federal Relations of the Association of American Universities; the Council on Government Affairs of the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges; the Ad Hoc Tax Coalition; and other higher education associations. In coordination with other ISU faculty and senior administrators, the federal relations staff also work closely with other educational and advocacy organizations, including the American Council on Education, the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges, the National Direct Student Loan Coalition, and many more.
